About the Department

The English Department has remained an integral part of this institution since its inception in 1926. Legendary teachers like Tarak Nath Sen , Kalidas Bose, Jnanpeeth award winning poet Bishnu Dey, eminent lexicographer Gauri Prasad Ghosh as well as other distinguished personalities have served this department. It has also produced generations of bright young people who have made their name in different fields, including education, journalism and bureaucracy.

Liberal progressive values of western literature have made our Department the guiding light of this institution as it blossomed from a college only for men, to one that  makes no discrimination based on caste, creed and gender.

A Post Graduate course was started in the department in 2009. Since 2018 it has come under the CBCS.
